GOMEZ HEADS TO TURKEY

German international Mario Gomez has ended his adventure in Italy football after securing a move to Turkish club Besiktas on a season-long loan deal.

Gomez has been at Fiorentina since 2013, but he has been plagued by injury problems of late. This led to his absence at the World Cup 2014, which was eventually won by the German national team. Germany were able to lift the World Cup title even without a star striker like Gomez and this is likely to sound the end of his international career. His move to Besiktas reflects the same, even though the latest StanJames odds suggest he is in with a chance of a return.

There is an indication that the move could be made permanent, as Besiktas have inserted a buyout clause in the deal. Since 2013, Gomez has featured in only 47 appearances for Fiorentina. He has managed only 14 goals from these games, which may be seen as a disappointment from the Italian club’s point of view.

Besiktas will be hoping to get much better from the striker. The team are on a high after surprisingly finishing in the third spot, which gives them access to the Champions League play-off games. They ended up only five points behind big teams like Galatasaray and this gap can be bridged with signings like Gomez.

"Besiktas announce that on Thursday the club reached an agreement with Fiorentina for the loan of Mario Garcia Gomez. The contract includes an option to make the deal permanent,” said the official statement on the Fiorentina website.

Besiktas have so far been disappointing in the friendly matches up until now. He defeated in two draws have been the only result that may have been able to manage. Günes will be hoping for better results in the coming games now that they are armed with the quality of Gomez up front. The 30-year-old still has a lot of time left in football.
